Apple’s mixed reality headset could be a game-changer – here’s how

Will Apple generalize the mixed reality headset? The company’s high-tech headgear is rumored to arrive in 2022 and could alert Meta’s Oculus Quest 2 and other headsets.

I think the key to success will not be gambling or passive forms of entertainment; instead, the Apple Mixed Reality Headset could change the game presented as a built-in fitness equipment.

Apple should make its first mixed reality hardware the ultimate destination for Apple Fitness Plus, the $ 9.99 / month on-demand training service that debuted about a year ago. I tried Apple Fitness Plus for a while, but I ended up finding it difficult to take workout classes on my small iPad and iPhone screens. Of course, I could stream workouts to my smart TV or use a Apple TV 4K, but that limits the places of exercise to my living room.

I want to work out in a headset that transports me to the beautiful So-Cal studios of Apple Fitness Plus in high resolution. Wherever I was, I could strap on my helmet and feel like I’m in a gym, without the hassle of crowds and cleanliness. Since this is already an Apple Fitness Plus feature, I would pair my Apple Watch to see my heart rate and Apple Watch Activity Rings in real time on my screen.

According to separate reports from Marc Gurman and Information, Apple’s mixed reality headset will feature external cameras that could be used for hand tracking and gesture control. This could be used to monitor form in workouts and suggest corrections based on your relative position, for example for a yoga session. Then, for a weight training class, the cameras would ideally allow me to see my own dumbbells, balancing the digital illusion with a dose of reality.

Virtual Reality Exercise: Can Apple Get It Right?

VR training programs are nothing new. I played my part of BOXVR and Beat Saber (one of the best Oculus Quest 2 games) to sweat when I’m stuck inside during the winter. My colleague Kelly Woo also tried an Oculus Quest to work earlier this year, discovering virtual reality exercise apps is both fun and effective.

Although you can initiate the Apple Watch’s “Fitness Gaming” type of workout to track metrics while using any of the best VR games for exercise, I still prefer to go to the gym in my building because it includes some of the best gym equipment with GymKit. i can raise my Apple watch 7 to the treadmill to automatically sync my metrics – a convenience Apple’s own VR headset could offer. If turning on the headset and starting a workout would trigger my Apple Watch to start activity tracking, I’d be happy.

Of course, I would be less thrilled if I had prepared for a workout, only to find that this so-called Apple Mixed Reality headset is running out of juice. I’m already looking for enough excuses to skip workouts. Excellent battery life will be crucial in making the headset viable exercise equipment. The Oculus Quest 2 has a battery life of 2-3 hours depending on what you’re doing in VR, so hopefully Apple’s headset will last at least that long.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo asserts that the the headset will support Wi-Fi 6E, allowing it to transfer large amounts of data with low latency. In other words, your iPhone or Mac computer could do all the hard work for the headset and help with battery life. This would alleviate concerns about having enough power to last an entire workout.

There is more to be resolved for Apple to do the best VR headset for exercise, or just the best VR headset overall. It can’t cost more than one Peloton bike, for a. It should also be comfortable and durable enough to stay in place during physical activity and survive sweating. If the headset really arrives in 2022, we should hear possible answers to all of these questions in due course.
