Asheville Parks & Recreation offers indoor programming opportunities to help residents stay active as the cooler weather approaches


Cooler temperatures are coming quickly to our mountains, but that doesn’t mean that park programming and activities are slowing down. Check out these recreational and athletic opportunities indoors during fall and winter.

Climbing wall at Center Tempie Avery Montford

Are you looking for an activity that will strengthen your muscles, improve your flexibility and challenge your cardiovascular system? Indoor climbing is for you! The Tempie Avery Montford Center is home to a 20 foot high climbing wall suitable for all ages and skill levels.

Learn 2 Climb classes for ages 7-12 are available this fall (limited numbers) – but look for more opportunities on the wall after the holidays.

Fitness centers

Did you know that you can use fitness centers to free? Fitness centers include cardio equipment, free weights, and more at Stephens-Lee and Shiloh. In Stephens-Lee, daycare for school-aged children is available Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. while parents use the fitness facilities.

The Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center is located at 121 Shiloh Road, 828-274-7739.

Opening hours of the fitness center:

  • Monday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Tuesday, 9 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
  • Sunday, noon – 4 p.m.

The Stephens-Lee Community Center is located at 30 George Washington Carver Avenue, 828-350-2058.

Opening hours of the fitness center:

  • Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Thursday – 9:30 a.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Sunday, noon – 4 p.m.

Sports Athletic Leagues

Opportunities include youth and adult basketball, adult volleyball, indoor disc golf putt league, badminton and table tennis! Find information on youth athletics at this link. Find information on adult athletics at this link.

Harvest house

Active aging is good for the body, mind and soul. Harvest House offers a wide variety of classes including contemporary line dance, international folk dance, and weight loss. If dancing is not your interest, Harvest House also has a carpentry workshop, clay workshop, weaving workshop, and open pool hours as well as open darts hours. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.
