Flint women’s skin care business that started in a one-bedroom apartment flourishes in storefront


FLINT, MI – La’Asia Johnson began experimenting four years ago with different recipes to create skin and hair care products that would be better and more effective for her after experiencing a broken rash caused by products purchased in stores.

Over the course of several years, interest in these initial products that she created to suit her skin became more popular than Johnson anticipated.

Johnson is expected to host a grand opening for Elle Jae Essentials, a skin-care boutique, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 4 at 3037 Flushing Road, Suite G in Flint.

As part of the grand opening celebration, customers can enjoy a 50% sale on their second item and a new donut-themed body butter sampler. Edible donuts matching the flavors of the sampler will also be offered to customers.

The boutique will showcase its all-natural, homemade skin care products for women with sensitive skin who want a healthy, natural alternative to traditional products.

These products include body butters, candles, body oils, body cleansers, body scrubs, hair care, lip butters, and DIY experiences so customers can customize the ingredients. of their articles and perfumes.

Prior to becoming a business owner, Johnson, 26, worked as a social worker with children with autism in Genesee County.

She felt fulfilled while doing the job, connecting with the kids and living in her hometown of Flint.

“The first product I ever made was body butter and my only goal and my only goal in making this body butter was literally to provide me with something that smelled great,” Johnson said.

Before making his own body butter, Johnson began to notice that his body was going to erupt in rashes and hives.

She eventually saw a dermatologist who prescribed something for her that he thought might help, but when her skin problems didn’t go away, she started doing her own research.

“I would see it in hot areas where I was spraying my perfumes,” Johnson explained. “I decided to do a little investigation and found that a lot of the products I was using contained a ton of chemicals that really shouldn’t be allowed to be sold to us.”

Not long after, Johnson started making his own concoction for a body butter recipe. It was quickly a hit with not only her skin, but also her colleagues, family and friends.

Rumor had circulated that Johnson had a product that was good for the skin like his. And from the first month of making their initial product, everyone wanted to try it out.

“I slowly started replacing these chemicals with my products and they took a life of their own,” Johnson said. “I was doing stuff for my coworkers for free, I just shared it with them, and they started telling their friends about it. My mom is at her job giving stuff.

She continued to make body butters and expanded into other products as she used her one-bedroom apartment as the headquarters for her new business.

Johnson made the decision two years ago to quit his job and move into a three-bedroom apartment.

She found a production facility within months of the move and hired eight people as she continued to see the business grow.

The company now serves thousands of women every year, with the number growing every year, Johnson explained. The new brick and mortar store will also serve as the production facility for the company.

Johnson said 60 to 70 percent of his business comes from social media traffic, including Facebook and Instagram.

She has also seen tremendous growth in her business once she learned how to use Facebook ads, Johnson said.

“The premise of opening a store was of course to sell the products, but we really want to be an educational hub to educate community members about the dangers of toxic beauty products,” Johnson said. “Educate them on the best products they can use and probably already have in their house to make their own DIY beauty products. “

Johnson said DIY classes for making their own products range from $ 10 to $ 25.

Going forward, Johnson would like to expand into cleaning products, she said.

The owner of the business said she believed the business was successful because there was such attention to detail when it came to ingredients.

“We pay very close attention to the ingredients that go into the products and the quality of those ingredients,” Johnson said. “I was very, very committed to always making sure that we are providing the best possible products to our customers, so I am always looking for ways to improve the process, improve the products and improve the quality of the products. ingredients.”

When she made the initial decision to quit her job and become a full-time business owner, Johnson said she felt torn because she loved what she was doing, but she was also happy to ‘offer something to its customers and to the town of Flint that they haven’t been on display before.

“We really want it to be a community center where community members feel comfortable coming in and having a clean, safe and fun experience for their families, something to do with their kids, something safe and creative to make for a date night, ”said Johnson. “Just something different in Flint Town.”
