How Adventure Cruise Ships Will Become Europe’s Most Sustainable Fleet


A voyage group’s cruise ships will become the most environmentally friendly fleet in Europe after a multi-million pound upgrade. Hurtigruten, which operates adventure and expedition holiday cruises, has pledged to reduce CO2 emissions by 25% and nitrogen oxide by up to 80% – and this program is another step towards this goal.

Hurtigruten Norway is the world’s leading adventure travel group, offering unique land and small boat adventures from pole to pole – and anywhere in between. It is revolutionizing the travel industry’s approach to sustainability, operating from multiple ports including Dover.

With the upgrades, which will be completed in 2023, passengers can expect greener sailings on Hurtigruten Norway’s seven Coastal Express ships. All ships are uniquely equipped to allow them to navigate the confined spaces and dramatic coastlines of their destinations.

“This is the largest environmental upgrade in Hurtigruten’s history, and one of the largest of its kind in Europe. This will have a real impact on reducing emissions in Norwegian waters. The fact that such an investment also has ripple effects in local communities along the coast, is something we are very proud of,” said Hedda Felin, Managing Director of Hurtigruten Norway.

Three of the seven ships will be converted to hybrid ships. The next set to be completed is MS Richard With, which is currently at Myklebust Yard in northwest Norway, where the ship will be fitted with brand new main engines and batteries. It will be the same on board the MS Kong Harald and the MS Nordlys.

Three other ships – MS Nordnorge, MS Nordkapp and MS Polarlys – will also be upgraded, while the newest ship in the fleet, MS Vesterålen, has already been fitted with brand new engines and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) facilities from 2019. makes it possible to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by several means, including the treatment of exhaust gases or the use of alternative fuels such as gas or methanol.

Ms. Felin added: “Our goal is zero emissions. But the technology is not yet mature enough, and we need to do what we can to reduce emissions with the best technology available today and extend the life of the iconic ships we have in our fleet.”

After the ongoing ecological upgrade of the Hurtigruten Norway fleet, the group will have six hybrid vessels. The Hurtigruten Group stopped using heavy fuel oil over a decade ago and was the first expedition cruise line to ban non-essential single-use plastic throughout its operations.

Hurtigruten operates the MS Maud from Dover, which sails on various cruises including a spectacular Northern Lights, Norwegian fjords and voyages to the midnight sun near the Arctic Circle. He also sails to remote parts of the British Isles encountering incredible birdlife, geological wonders, secluded idylls, picturesque villages, incredible landscapes and distinct cultural identities in each destination.

MS Maud, formerly MS Midnatsol, is named after one of the most famous polar ships of all time, Roald Amundsens “Maud” of 1917. The original “Maud” was named after the first queen of modern Norway . She also had her namesake in Hurtigruten’s 1925 flagship DS Dronning Maud (“DS Queen Maud”).

Each expedition trip is accompanied by a hand-picked team of modern-day specialists and explorers. Highly experienced and knowledgeable, the team act as cruise guides educating passengers on safety, sustainability and science.

They will present lectures and lead activities during the cruise to help passengers learn more about the natural and cultural treasures of Norway and the British Isles.
