I tend to be a bit aggressive in my skincare routine, especially since I’m impatient and want results right now. The buildup of retinol, exfoliants, vitamin C, and other products that help reduce my dark spots and hyperpigmentation is doing my skin a disservice. In fact, it backfires when I destroy my skin’s protective barrier. I end up with sensitized, irritated, dull and excessively dry and inflamed skin, which turns into darker spots. I came across Ren’s Evercalm Overnight Recovery Balm ($52) and had to test it out to see if it’s something that can help my sensitive, reactive skin.
Ren’s Evercalm Overnight Recovery Balm is an oil-based balm formulated for sensitive, reactive or dry skin. It is said to calm and soothe the skin, relieving problems such as dryness, flaking, irritation and inflammation overnight. It is also believed to protect and repair the skin and its moisture barrier. The balm is packed with skin-loving, conditioning ingredients, including almond oil, borage oil, flaxseed oil, jojoba oil, and sunflower oil, all of which are rich in fatty acids and help minimize dehydration and water loss. It also contains beta-glucan and vitamin E, which help soothe and minimize skin irritations and sensitivities.
The Recovery Balm has a thick, oily balm texture that quickly transforms into a lightweight conditioning oil once I warm it on my skin, much like a cleansing balm. I use a pea-sized amount all over my face as the last step in my nighttime skincare routine. The balm seems to sit on the skin, but I was really impressed with how it sinks into my skin, conditioning it in seconds. It absorbs quickly and isn’t greasy, but my skin feels hydrated and softer with a plump, hydrated look. It has a light and fresh botanical scent; I don’t know how to describe it other than it smells green.
The texture of the balm is unique; it has the best parts of a healing oil and salve, making it versatile and useful for a variety of reasons. Evercalm Overnight Recovery Balm can be used all over the face as a sleeping mask or as a spot treatment for areas that need a little extra love. It helps hydrate and soothe my skin on days when it feels very dehydrated and irritated, revitalizing my dry patches and reducing flaking and inflammation. It was especially helpful during allergy season when I needed to heal the skin around my eyes and nose. As pictured, within two days of using this overnight recovery balm, my skin looked smoother. I even use it on days when I use retinoid treatment to offset the intensity and irritation.
Ren’s Evercalm Overnight Recovery Balm is a product that I always have on hand in my skincare routine. It’s not something I need to use every day, but it’s a product that’s there to help me when I need it. I understand that the price is higher. However, the texture of this balm is something I have never seen before. Traditional healing ointments sit on the skin and coat my pillowcases at night, while this balm quickly absorbs and soothes my skin while I sleep. It’s something that doesn’t move all over my face either. If I want to revitalize the outer corners of my eyes or fade a dry spot on my eyelid, the balm doesn’t get into my eyes, making my vision blurry. It just stays where I want it, sinks into my skin and does its skin-soothing job. Plus, a little goes a long way when using this product. If you have sensitive skin or tend to over-exfoliate, having this in your skincare stash can save the day.
