the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is receiving a major software update that should improve its health and fitness tracking capabilities. New tools for setting goals, getting coached and personalizing workouts could make it the best smart watches always better.

Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic users can install the software update from February 9, the same day as the Samsung unboxed event where the Galaxy S22 the series should take center stage. As if the best samsung watch wasn’t already destined to be the ultimate S22 accessory, three new features will be added to the Samsung Health suite.

More information on body composition

If you know how to use samsung galaxy watch 4 to measure body composition, you know the non-invasive BIA sensor can read your body fat percentage, body mass index (BMI), muscle mass, bone mass, body water percentage and more. Body composition readings via the Galaxy Watch (or one of the best smart scalesby the way) are not a substitute for regular check-ups, but are handy for monitoring body changes as a result of new fitness routines.

With the new software update, these metrics can be tracked over time to provide personalized insights and goals. The information will be powered by Centr2, a digital fitness program hosted by Chris Hemsworth. Considering how impressed we are with Chris Hemsworth’s Arm Workout, we’d definitely be willing to hear Thor’s advice on getting in shape. Galaxy Watch 4 users will also be able to try all Centr2 features for free for 30 days.

Better fitness and sleep tracking

Anyone who has started running or cycling might be more excited about Samsung’s new interval goal feature. Users can set preset time and distance goals, then their Galaxy Watch 4 will guide them through a custom intensity workout. Some best running watches (especially the best garmin watches) already have similar functionality, but it’s good to see Samsung catching up.

But the Galaxy Watch 4 software update won’t just help during workouts. A new feature also supports recovery. Samsung is overhauling the smartwatch’s sleep tracking features by now tracking seven-day sleep patterns and performing manual sleep surveys of users. Using this data, the watch’s sleep tracking program will assign an animal-themed sleep profile that best describes the user’s sleep patterns, then guide the user through a several weeks designed to improve the quality of sleep.

One of the characteristics of the best fitness trackers is a comprehensive approach to health tracking, meaning recovery takes priority just as much as step counting and exercise minute counting. Fitbit Daily Readiness Score and the Ring Oura Generations 3Readiness Score are good examples of how sleep data can indicate how much effort a user can actually put into their workouts for the day. The Galaxy Watch 4 doesn’t have its own readiness score, but the new standby features seem to point in that direction.

New watch faces and straps

In addition to the fitness tracking features described above, this Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 software update includes new watch faces and watch band accessories. Improved faces offer “additional colors and digital clock fonts,” while buyers can now find fabric strap and interchangeable link strap options.

There are some improvements to Wear OS 3 on the Galaxy Watch 4 also worth noting. Users will be able to stream music via Wi-Fi or LTE from the youtube music app, regardless of the paired smartphone.

Google Assistant…coming soon

Perhaps more importantly, Samsung has announced that Google Assistant “will be available on the Galaxy Watch 4 series in the coming months.” We were disappointed that the Galaxy Watch 4 lacked this feature at launchbut the upcoming addition should make the best smartwatch for android more appealing to those who love voice commands. In our experience, Bixby does not cut it.

Samsung will likely take a moment during the Unpacked keynote on February 9 to mention the Galaxy Watch 4’s new features. Be sure to check out our guide to how to watch Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2022 to follow with the biggest announcements.
